New World Zorro DVD Release Information

I sent out this information on two lists, and I am also placing this here in order to reach a wider audience.

Daryl reports that John Gertz is in the final stages of acquiring a distributor for the series. This means that the New World Zorro series will soon be on DVD in an official release in the United States and elsewhere.

John Gertz has requested that fans let him know of their preferences for a DVD release. Daryl is passing on the responses. Reply to this message if you would like to have input. Here are the questions:

Do you want the DVD set released one season at a time or all at once?

Would you like to see a bloopers reel?

Would you like to see a cast reunion? In what format: Interview, concluding episode TV show (keep in mind the cast is now 17 years older), concluding episode radio drama

Would you like to see writers, directors, producers, etc, reunion interview?

A release of some special memorabilia, or maybe cast autographed special edition DVD series?

OMG! That is great news! Personally, I would love to have the seasons separately, with an option for a boxed set. Anything else that could be included would definitely be worth it.

I would love to have these on DVD! A box set would be nice with as many 'goodies' as possible(maybe some commentary from Duncan Regehr or a history of Zorro). Being that the show was only on three seasons, it makes sense to just make them all at once in a set. You might want to try Shout!Factory or Mill Creek for the release, they seem to be known for putting out rare TV shows. When they release this show, I can mark it off of my list of 'Most Anticipated'. Thanks for the news! Z

My family and I are absolutely thrilled that the Zorro series is coming out on DVD soon! I must say, we are rather addicted to the episodes. (so much so that certain members of our family who would normally retire to bed by 9:00 will stay up watching -admittedly- bootlegged episode copies until 1 am!) To have the real disks would be a dream come true!

Boxed sets seem more reasonable since the show only aired for 3 1/2 years. But it would be nice for individual seasons to be available in addition.

For special features on the upcoming DVDs ... anything and everything! Bloopers. Interviews. Everything. A concluding reunion episode would be wonderful! Perhaps it could be set as though several years had passed and it depicted Zorro/Diego's future. (...preferably married to Victoria yet still occasionally needing to be Zorro...)

As loyal fans we are starving for more of our favorite swashbuckling hero!!!

I'd be nice if you can bring them out in a box set and for sale separately per season. Why not? I was so excited when I started searching the web for my favourate tv shows and found that they are putting this on DVD. Sign me up! I see you're on Facebook too. Great!

I'm a little late chiming in, but my obsessions tend to run in cycles, so...

I was digging around the internet, trying to find a way to replace some of my dying episodes, only to discover that -- finally! -- the series would be released on DVD. This is brilliant! I'm so very excited!

I would love to see the series released in a complete box set with as many extras as they can possibly round up. Commentary by the actors, actresses, and writers might be good, as well as some info on the work they did with the historical societies and researchers. Bloopers also tend to go over well with fans... especially those of us in obscure fandoms such as this. =)

While I can see the draw for releasing in individual seasons -- more revenue generated, while allowing consumers to purchase as budgets allow -- I'd rather have it all in one go.

A final episode would be fantastic, but a radio drama does seem to make more sense, given the time lapse. On the other hand, some of the folks behind "Highlander" did a "reunion" short, with everyone considerably aged. It was still fun, and still devoured by the fans. =) Alas, I'd so miss seeing the swordplay!

All the mentioned things should be included, without a doubt! It would also be nice to see an original script or two. And don't forget a release of the soundtrack - every piece of music used in the entire series should be put on the market. Give us a quality CD! :)

I have an idea for a concluding episode TV show of New World Zorro. Unfortunately, I won't be able to write it, as I'm due back in college at the end of next month, but I've got what I hope is a solid storyline. Here goes.

It's been 17 years since Don Diego revealed his secret to Victoria and Don Alejandro. Victoria and Don Diego have since married and have two children, Elena and Alejandro (named after Don Diego's parents). Don Diego has hung up the sword, mask & cape and put Toranado out to pasture, hopefully for good. However, Don Diego continues practicing the sword, with Felipe, who is now a part of the family. But the peace in Los Angeles is shattered when Carlos Ramon, Luis Ramon's nephew, comes, seeking revenge for his uncle's death at Devil's Fortress and for exposing his mother Hermalinda as a thief (Hermalinda was Ramon's cousin in the Season 2 episode The Whistling Bandit). Ignacio De Soto tells Carlos that De Soto's death was an accident, but Carlos refuses to listen and storms out of the cuartel. De Soto warns Diego through Mendoza, while he sneaks out the back way to warn Victoria, who is still working at the tavernm himself, and Diego also tries to warn Victoria. They're too late, as Carlos has taken Victoria hostage, along with De Soto, Elena and Alejandro, and threatens to kill them and rob the pueblo unless Zorro fights him to the death. Victoria and the children plead with Carlos to let them go, but Carlos knocks Victoria out with the butt-end of his pistol. Alejandro tries to stop Carlos, but Carlos shoots him. Elena screams, and holds her brother's head in her lap, looking at Carlos, sobbing. Carlos smiles. Don Diego cannot risk anyone else knowing that he is Zorro. Suddenly a second gunshot is heard. End of Part I.

Part II begins with Don Diego running back to the tavern, scared to death. Mortally wounded, De Soto crawls out from behind the tavern and cries out to Diego to help him. De Soto dies calling Zorro's name. Don Diego runs to the cave, furious, and, with Felipe's help, becomes Zorro once more. Zorro rides out to fight Carlos, and challenges him to mortal combat. The tavern door opens. Carlos smiles. Zorro dismounts and instructs Felipe and Don Alejandro to tend to Victoria. The entire pueblo has gathered in the plaza. Looking at everyone, bu particularly at Zorro, Carlos unsheathes his sword, smiling bitterly as he recounts his uncle's death at Devil's Fortress as a passerby had told it to him, and his mother's exposure as The Whistling Bandit at Zorro's hands. Zorro is furious, however, and he fights Carlos with a passion no one has ever seen in him before. However, Carlos is also an experienced swordsman and fights so well he impresses even Zorro. Elena brings Alejandro out, and Don Alejandro and Felipe bring out Victoria. At length, Zorro disarms Carlos with a well-executed feint, and points his sword at his chest. Carlos defies Zorro to kill him, but Zorro refuses, saying that murder is a coward's solution. Zorro tells Carlos to leave Los Angeles for good. Zorro carves three Z's on Carlos; one on his shirt, the second on his right sleeve and the third on his left sleeve. Zorro sheathes his sword and runs to Victoria and Alejandro. However, Carlos runs up and stabs Zorro fatally from behind. Enraged, the pueblo drag Carlos to the square, where they immediately make a scaffold. Dying, Zorro reveals his identity to the pueblo as Victoria takes off his mask. Don Carlos is hanged, and Don Alejandro is named Alcalde. Zorro, aka Don Diego, is given a simple funeral, with Toranado standing forever at his grave, and Zorro's sword, hat and cape marking his grave. Soon after, Victoria recovers, as does Alejandro and they serve the pueblo of Los Angeles wisely. The End.

another good idea would be the television promos for each episode. also, I read on Wikipedia that the VHS versions of the four part storylines showing how Don Diego became Zorro & the episodes with Risendo have one scene each that didn't make it in the network airing. If it's true, it would be a wonderful idea for those scenes to be included seamlessly into the episodes. Also, commentary from Mr. Gertz, the stars & the writers would be a good idea, in addition to how the idea for the series began (in the form of a documentary, or something). plus, showing how they filmed the episodes and for which scenes Mr. Regehr was doubled. also, cast and crew reflecting on the show via new and archival interviews.

It would be nice to know what the people behind the camera were planning for the future of the series, when it was cancelled? How long had they planned to go on and in what direction? Would they have ended the series the 4th season anyway?

What is interesting is how they were planning to end it some day and it would be wonderful to know this. The producers or writers must have had an idea about it. After all it is they who should do the finale not us fans.

Another thing: years ago a rumour survaced that Jim Carter were going to reprise his role as Colonel Palomarez in the 4th season. That was going to happen in an episode called "Stranger Than Fiction"... does anybody know if this is true or if it's just something made up by somebody?

Jennifer White said...

As the story goes, I believe that Robert McCullough told a fan about "Stranger Than Fiction" and how Jim Carter was supposed to be in it. I believe the story is true, although I have no proof. The script for "Stranger Than Fiction" has never surfaced, but some other unfilmed scripts have surfaced, so it is likely that "Stranger Than Fiction" does exist in script form.

Can you tell me more about the unfilmed scripts? It sound very interesting...

I might give some information in a new post to the blog. It would be better to do it that way, since it does not relate to the content of this post.
